San Antonio Chapter 99s
March 2009

Since our tower tour fell through last month, we just met at IHOP, had breakfast, and visited through brunch. We're glad to see Denise Pride up and about after her surgery.

Our next meeting will be March 14, 10:00 AM at the Lion and Rose at 700 East Sonterra - same place we met in January. From 281 North, Sonterra is the next exit past 1604. Their phone: 210-798-5466.

On a sad note, we are saddened to hear about the passing of Cheryl's mom. Patty arranged a beautiful reception for Cheryl and Mac's family and friends, where we gathered after the service.

Some of you might remember John Karger, Director of Last Chance Forever. He again is requesting help in transporting birds for their organization. Right now, he needs someone (and their plane) to pick up a bald eagle in Lufkin and bring it to San Antonio. If you are interested in getting involved with this group, you may contact him at raptor@ddc.net Their website is www.lastchanceforever.org

FAA completed an initial testing of Swift Fuel biofuel avgas. Swift believes it can bring its fuel to market for less than $2 a gallon.

Runway Safety Tip
When operating on an airport surface and unsure of your position or taxi route, always confirm with ATC. Ground control will provide "progressive" taxi instructions upon request for pilots who may be unfamiliar with the airport. Reports from pilots to the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) show that errors commonly occur after the flight crew senses something is wrong, but presses on, thinking things will soon make sense -but a runway incursion is about to happen. Ask first! More information about Runway Safety can be found at http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraffic/airports/runway_safety/. You can call or email Runway Safety suggestions or comments to Michael Lenz at michael.lenz@faa.gov or 202-267-7949. (Submitted by Cheryl Casillas)
