Hi Everyone! Well, guess we didn't get a newsletter out for June - just the banquet notice. And, what a banquet it was! Time sure did fly while thirty of us were having fun. The food was great and plenty of it. Patty and Terry made beautiful table centerpieces and some of us took them home (mine still looks great). There were also lots of door prizes - another surprise from Patty. She did a beautiful job installing the new officers - Reni Moczygemba as Chair, Becky Smith as Vice Chair (in absentia), Jo Agee-Housler as Secretary and Sherry was again installed as Treasurer. Attnedees were: Reni and Roger Moczygemba and guest, Jason Dykes, Jo Agee-Housler, Denise Pride, Gloria Blank, Laura Richter and son, Paul, Winnie Clements and daughter Ann, Marty Goppert, Sherry Walker, Stella and Ray Leis, Patty and Ben Taylor, new member Erin Palombo, Margaret Cosby and guest Claire, guests Bodi and Jack Tanguma, Betty Sue Basham and 491/2 Willie Nunez, Cheryl Casillas, Theresa Klemcke and our guest speaker Col. Katarina Bentler.Winnie Clements had donated a B-17 Bomber Clock for a raffle to be given away at the banquet. Theresa Klemcke was the winner, which is so appropriate since her father was a B-17 pilot in WWII! Thank you Winnie! I understand this generated $160 for our treasury.
Reni prenented Patty with an outgoing appreciation gift from the Chapter for a job fantastically well done! Also, we want to extend our thanks and appreciation to Col. Bentler for giving us her time to come out and talk to us about her flying career.
* * * * * * Just a refresher - the Treasurer position is not elected, but is one that is appointed by the Board and she may keep this job as long as she wants. Thank goodness Sherry wants! We've had great continuity all these years. I'm sure she's aware if she gives it up, it's cuntomary to move up the chairs. Thank you, Sherry, for taking such good care of our finances.
Also, many accolades to Sherry for being our webmaster! It's a huge job and she has placed so much on our website and under "Members Only" that it makes a terrific reference - Bylaws, Newsletters, Minutes, Directory, etc. Check it out at http://www.sanantonio99s.org.
We welcome our new members Pat Aken and Erin Palombo. Both fly out of Castroville. So good to meet them at the banquet and look forward to finding out more about them at the meeting.
So far, Laura Richter and Jo Agee-Housler are delegates to the International Conference in Chicago next month. If anyone else is going, please let Reni know at the meeting so it can be reflected in the minutes. Since these are tax deductions (well, everything with no element of enjoyment), the Minutes are proof that you were a delegate. (Also for Section Meetings.)
Proposed amendments at the International level are attached to this newsletter. PLEASE print them out and bring them to the July meeting where they will be discussed, and the delegates given the members' wishes on voting at the conference.
Also at the meeting, Reni will give a report on the business at the Section Meeting in Grandbury.
Hopefully, we will also hear all about the Air Race Classic adventures of Sherry, Nancy, and Becky.
Our next neeting - July 11, 10:00 am in Sherry Walker's hangar at Boerne Stage Airport. Hope you all can attend. Lots of business to take care of, and . . . it's at an airport so some of you can fly in! We'll probably do lunch at El Rio afterwards (most of you still insist on calling it Margarita's).
June 1st is chapter dues time again! If you don't remember if you paid your 2009-2010 dues (June 1 - May 31 fiscal year), go to our chapter website and click on Dues. The list of who has paid is there. Our webmaster, Sherry, changes the password for the "Members Only" section each year - she will give you the password when you pay your dues.
* * * * * * Did you know that according to the AIM, pilot impairment contributes to many more accidents than failure of aircraft systems? We all worry about system problems, but do we pay enough attention to the pilot problems?
Pilots need to complete the "I'm Safe" chekclist before each flight. It's: Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, and Emotion.
Any one of these items we know can affect pilot performance. Often we have a small dose of a few of them -- perhaps a little fatigue from a hard day's work, maybe getting a little cough, under a little stress to get back for an appointment. When we think of each of these items individually, we think, ' Well that's not a big deal'. But when we look at the checklist, we can see that they can all be cumulative. We spend a lot of time preflighting our airplane. We need to spend at least a little time preflighting ourselves before we start the airplane.
~ Wally Moran* * * * * * The following safety article was submitted by Cheryl:
NTSB Identification: CHI08CA271
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Accident occurred Tuesday, September 02, 2008 in Munising, MI
Probable Cause Approval Date: 1/22/2009
Aircraft: Cessna T182T, registration N140NE
Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot places a gasoline-powered "weed whip" on the rear passenger seats of the airplae for a personal flight. The pilot smelled a "strong" smell of gasoline as the airplane touched down for landing at the destination airport. During the after landing taxi, the engine end of the weed whip fell behind the two front seats. The pilot stated at he reached back and placed the weed whip back onto the seats and "someting caused it to ignite." The pilot stated that he was charging his cell phone where the weed whip was located. The pilot stated that the smoke was so bad that he pulled the mixture control to idle cutoff and exited the airplane. The pilot was uninjured. The airplane was then consumed by fire.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable causes(s) of this accident as follows:
The inadequate prefllight planning/preparation by the pilot to carry a hazardous material aboard an airplane that resulted in a fire during an after-landing taxi.
* * * * * * The air racers, Nancy, Sherry, Rebecca and Mae, are returning today. I'll bet they are 4 tired "puppies"! Looking forward to hearing all about the race.
PLEASE try to make the meeting July 11th, Sherry's hangar, Boerne Stage Airfield. There's a lot on the agenda. Directions: Take I-10 West. Exit Leon Springs/Boerne Stage Road. Continue on the feeder road and turn left under I-10. You are on Boerne Stage road. You'll go about 3 miles and make a right turn (it's the first stop sign - you'll see Scenic Loop Cafe at your one o'clock). You are still on Boerne Stage Road - it makes a 90 degree turn. You'll go about 2 1/2 miles to the road to the airport. There will be a sign. Turn right (it's the only way you can turn), make the first left and after a few yards, you will enter the airport area. Go to the north end of the airport. Turn right just past the FBO/shop. Turn left at the next taxiway / driveway. Sherry's is the second hangar on your right.
